ARientation 1.07

The deck represents a notable shift in how playing cards can be used, integrating augmented reality to overlay digital content onto physical cards. In practice, the effect is more practical than magical, and the experience depends on a compatible mobile application and thoughtful content design.

As a platform for gameplay and content exploration, the cards enable users to engage with existing AR experiences or to design personalized interactions. The result is a flexible medium that blends traditional card play with interactive media.

ARientation originated as a research project exploring the use of augmented reality in learning environments. Since then, the project has extended its scope into marketing, gaming, and tourism, testing how AR can support informal learning, navigation, and engagement. The following implementations illustrate this trajectory.

• Library Scavenger Hunt — Students used ARientation cards to reveal hints, guiding them through a library tour that introduced facilities and locating books.
• AR Quiz Rally — Visitors in a small town in Japan employed the cards to direct them to points of interest, combining exploration with learning prompts.

The project is led by Eric Hawkinson, a learning technologist based in Japan. The stated goals are to identify novel and creative applications of augmented reality in learning, to refine best practices for AR-driven engagement, and to study AR’s role within educational settings.
